Abstract:One of the challenges in product development is to meet customer demand in the dynamic market. Virtual Manufacturing (VM) technologies offer cost-effective tools for product development with features of visualization, interaction, immersion, and integration. However, problems become complicated, particularly when systems are hierarchical, heterogeneous, and distributed. It is difficult to model these problems using existing methods. Conventional methods cannot handle changes, unpredictable events, and disturbances in a satisfactory manner. The resulting model may not be valid for long in dynamic environments. It is necessary to improve existing systems by developing new methods for the need of dynamics and uncertainty in the product development. Effective methods and techniques are required to generate alternative configurations timely, and to evaluate the system configurations effectively. A flexible, reconfigurable and reactive VM-based system with capabilities in managing the change and uncertainty is expected. This talk will analyze applications and problems of existing VM technologies. New methods and techniques are proposed to meet the need of dynamics and uncertainty of current product development. Examples are presented to demonstrate the proposed methods.
